Chlorophyll recovers electrons in water molecules during a process called photolysis of water, which takes place with the participation of one of the previously formed enzymes catalyzed by structures containing manganese and calcium atoms. Water molecules are split into hydrogen and oxygen ions; hydrogen participates in chemical reactions leading to the formation of ATP molecules, and oxygen is released into the atmosphere and used by countless organisms for breathing.
In the second stage, plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and, using a series of enzymes in a chain of complex operations, build carbohydrates such as sucrose or starch from carbon extracted from CO2, and from them other organic substances.
