In the Central Gov., the legislative branch was the only branch, each state had one vote in congress, congress could settle disputes amoung states, make treaties, issue coins, borrow money from states, ask states for soilders to assemble an army. Congress could not force the states to comply with its demands.
The states could issue money, refuse congress’ requests, have representatives vote in congress. All states were loosely tied together.
The constitution gave more power to the central gov. Federal supremacy was introduced. The central gov introduced the 3 branch system.
The Great Compromise helped solve the issue of how many representative each state recieved in the congress. The Great Compromise blended together the New Jersey plan and the Virginia plan. This is how the two house congressional system came to be. The House of reps. employed the Virginia plan, which gave each state different numbers of reps. based on population. The Senate used the New Jersey plan, which gave each state 1 rep regardless of their population.
